On this page we list some resources explaining how the HPx-eos are constructed and calibrated. See also our description of how the HPx-eos are constructed and user guide.
The resources below include both published papers, and some explanations of key points from the papers that can be freely downloaded. We hope the latter are accessible to the general user, and could be used for example in teaching materials. Resources relate to:
- the Holland & Powell dataset
- the formulation of a-x relations in the HPx-eos
- the relationship between the Holland & Powell dataset and the HPx-eos
- existing sets of HPx-eos (in THERMOCALC, MAGEMin, Perple_X, ….)
- calibration of the HPx-eos
- uncertainties in HPx-eos calculations
For other queries about the HPx-eos or the Holland & Powell dataset, feel free to ask questions in our user discussion group.
The Holland & Powell dataset
- Version 6: Holland & Powell (2011) J Metamorph Geol 29 333-383
- Version 5: Holland & Powell (1998) J Metamorph Geol 16 309-343
Developments between version 6.0 and 6.33:
A-x relations
- Powell & Holland (1993)
- Holland & Powell (1996)a
- Holland & Powell (1996)b
Existing sets of HPx-eos
Perple_X users: Jeff Moyen has kindly shared the following Excel spreadsheet that makes it simpler to identify the HPx-eos families in Perple_X. Please note, neither Jeff nor I can guarantee that everything here is correct – it’s still the user’s responsibility!
- Old Igneous set: Holland et al (2018) J Petrol 59 881-900 — incorrect, do not use!!!
- Metabasite set: Green et al (2016) J Metamorph Geol 34 845-892
- Metapelite set: White et al (2014) J Metamorph Geol 32 261-286
- Older metapelite set, with dataset version 5.5: White et al (2007) J Metamorph Geol 25 511-527

Uncertainties
- Green & Powell, A new method in geothermobarometry: avPT+. Submitted to Journal of Metamorphic Geology.
